As we commemorate International Human Rights Day today, we are reminded of the significance of promoting and protecting human rights globally. Despite progress made, numerous challenges persist, particularly in Nigeria.
*_The Alarming State of Human Rights in Nigeria_*
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, continues to grapple with egregious human rights violations. These abuses have severe consequences for individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole. Some of the most pressing concerns include:
‣ Extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances, often perpetrated by state security forces
‣ Torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, frequently used to extract confessions or punish perceived enemies of the state
‣ Arbitrary arrests and detention, where individuals are held without charge or trial, often in inhumane conditions
‣ Restrictions on freedom of speech, assembly, and association, stifling dissenting voices and limiting civic space
‣ Violence against women and girls, including rape, domestic violence, and other forms of gender-based violence
‣ Discrimination against marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities
*_The Devastating Consequences of Human Rights Abuses in Nigeria_*
The human rights crisis in Nigeria has far-reaching and devastating consequences, including:
‣ Erosion of trust in government and state institutions
‣ Undermining of the rule of law and democratic principles
‣ Perpetuation of poverty, inequality, and social injustice
‣ Damage to Nigeria’s international reputation and credibility
‣ Undermining of economic development and stability
*_A Call to Action for the Nigerian Government_*
As we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we urge the Nigerian government to take immediate and concrete steps to address the human rights crisis in the country. This includes:
‣ Investigating and prosecuting cases of extrajudicial killings, torture, and other human rights abuses
‣ Repealing laws that restrict freedom of speech, assembly, and association
‣ Strengthening institutions that promote human rights, including the National Human Rights Commission
‣ Providing support and protection to marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities.
‣ Ensuring accountability and transparency in government and the security forces
*_A Call to Action for Nigerians_*
As we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we also call on all Nigerians to demand respect for their human rights and to hold their leaders accountable for promoting and protecting these rights. This includes:
‣ Educating themselves about their human rights and the laws that protect them
‣ Speaking out against human rights abuses and demanding justice for victims
‣ Participating in peaceful protests and advocacy campaigns to promote human rights
‣ Holding their leaders accountable for promoting and protecting human rights
‣ Supporting organizations and initiatives that promote human rights and social justice
*_A Call to Action for the International Community_*
As we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we also call on the international community to support Nigeria’s efforts to promote and protect human rights. This includes:
‣ Providing technical assistance and capacity-building support to Nigerian institutions
‣ Supporting organizations and initiatives that promote human rights and social justice in Nigeria
‣ Advocating for human rights and social justice in Nigeria through diplomatic channels
‣ Holding Nigerian leaders accountable for promoting and protecting human rights

As we commemorate International Human Rights Day, we remember that human rights are universal, indivisible, and inalienable. They are the foundation upon which just and equitable societies are built. Let us work together to promote human rights, challenge injustices, and create a world where every individual can live with dignity, respect, and freedom.
