1.0     INTRODUCTION

Postgraduate education represents a critical phase in academic and professional development, offering students advanced knowledge, specialised skills, and opportunities to contribute to societal demand for solutions and prosperity.

Modernisation, advances in communication, computation and automation brought about the needs to interrogate existing theories and hypothesis in order to update, ratify or even develop appropriate replacement to meet the realities of todays world. It is the postgraduate studies that equips the students with relevant skills and knowledge that are paramount for their success and adaptability in this rapidly evolving academic and professional world. Postgraduate education is hence undoubtedly a valuable investment for individuals seeking advanced knowledge, specialised skills, and enhanced opportunities in academia and various professions.

2.0     PREPARATION FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

The first step for a successful postgraduate study in any Institution is adequate preparation and readiness. Planning is vital for success in any human endeavour but postgraduate students in our Institutions of higher learning are ill-equipped at the onset of their studies. If you do not know the area or field of your research topic and tools needed for realisation of the thesis at the time of commencement of the program or matriculation then, you have no plan. In many Institutions you have to propose area of research and the research topic before an offer of admission can be given. Usually at undergraduate levels, you were introduced to large scope of your field of studies, if you are opportuned to have worked before your postgraduate admission then your experience would have guided you and become handy in the study and in identification of a most suitable topics of preference for specialisation and research.

Although your knowledge and experience would fast-track your mastery and acquisition of knowledge to complete your master’s degree or a PhD or even post doctorate degree. Your fashion and ambition to be an expert in a particular area of profession will serve as motivating force to overcome many challenges you may come across. You must of course read widely beyond the syllabus which is only a minimum academic requirement in order to have a wide understanding of your bias before concentrating on your chosen area of specialisation. Remember, no institution or university can give or teach you more than five percent of what you need for success in your professional life. Your hard work and total commitment have to be ninety five percent and above.
